#GenealogyTailgating Anyone?

Wireless Internet from MCPL parking lot
We want to let everyone know of a "holiday gift" of sorts for Macomb County Genealogy Group members, Mount Clemens residents and those in the Macomb County area.

Our favorite library, Mount Clemens Public Library, has adjusted its public internet access at its temporary location (300 N. Groesbeck Highway) so that its FamilySearch Affiliate status is now active and accessible again.

Mount Clemens Public Library first received its FamilySearch Affiliate status in October 2019. It was the first and we believe it is still the only library with FamilySearch Affiliate Status in Macomb County. But the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020 and later the library renovation began moving the library to a temporary location and more limited internet resources for patrons. It has been a long time without this resource our members quickly learned to value.

From MCPL Parking Lot: Unlocked!
There is now a table for one person to use inside the library for use with the internet connection. Masks are recommended when in the library. But there also is the option for what MCGG is calling, some #GenealogyTailgating if you are up for it. Or if you prefer not to be in a public space for longer periods.

Yes, baby it's cold outside and it will be for awhile. But you can connect to the library's wireless internet and sit in the comfort of your warm vehicle while parked in the parking lot. (Just make sure you have a enough gas in the gas tank if you keep the vehicle running and crack a window for some fresh air.)

We tested this out Sunday afternoon when it was a bright and 30 degree day and Wednesday afternoon when it wasn't so bright and we have these suggestions.

The signal seems stronger towards the side/rear of the building closer to the dog park. (We didn't try the parking spots facing the baseball field, just the ones facing the building.)

Internet Connection Options for MCPL
There are a few internet connection options for the library. There is the LibraryPublic-2.4G-ext; the LibraryPublic - parking lot; and LibraryPublic-5G-ext. What you see will depend on your device and likely seem to vary depending on where you park so you may see all or only a couple connection options. Signal strength may vary too.

Don't be impatient! When we tried Sunday the 2.4G connection was very slow and we didn't see the 5G connection option from either the first standard parking spot next to handicap or from a parking spot facing the building closer to the dog park. When we tried Wednesday, both connections were working well though we did have one connection drop briefly. We were fine after that.

Digital Images Accessible
On our Sunday visit the FireFox browser worked better than Chrome but on our Wednesday visit both browsers worked well.

What we are trying to stress is to be patient and try different options. Results will vary by device.

Other suggestions:  Remember to make sure your device is fully-charged before you arrive.

To save time since the connection can be slower, while at home bookmark the FamilySearch catalog pages for what you want to view so you don't have the lag/wait time while the website tries to load a search query. The drop-down search entries seemed to be really, really slow at loading on our Sunday visit. And again remember your patience and allow the page to load before trying to click on to the next step.

From Home: Locked Digital Microfilm
On our Sunday visit the library's wireless would not load the library's website. But on our Wednesday visit the library website did load in both the FireFox and Chrome browsers. Once the library website loads you can go to the Major Genealogy Databases page and access the library's Ancestry Library Edition, Detroit Free Press 1831-1999, Fold3.com, and American Ancestors subscriptions.

This re-connection for patrons is just in time because the temporary, remote access to Ancestry Library Edition ends December 31, 2021. Happy Holidays and have fun researching!

Access Major Databases Too!
Regarding a separate matter, at this time the local databases (i.e. the obituary index, etc.) on the library's website are still unavailable. We will let everyone know when the error message is fixed and the databases are working again.

So ...

2022 Genealogy Educational Opportunities Await You

So with just days to go until the clock rings in the new year of 2022, have you made any genealogy education goals for yourself? If so, read this post for some ideas on how to full-fill those goals!

2022 Genealogy Webinar Schedules Released by a Variety of Providers
There are lots of genealogy learning opportunities via webinars -- a live presentation you view using services on your computer/device. Many of these webinars are free to view live. If you want to watch one later it may require a membership fee. If you really like the webinars of a particular host or want to see an older, archived webinar the cost of membership is usually not very high for many of these webinar hosts.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars has released its 2022 webinar schedule. (The website looks/acts more like a tablet/smartphone app.) You can register for webinars individually or, click the Register for Multiple Webinars at Once to select all the webinars. There are 119 webinars (118 in English) at this time.

Legacy Family Tree webinars are mostly held at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays though there are a few Friday afternoon and Wednesday evening webinars. They are free to view live and for almost a week afterwards at which time they become accessible to webinar subscribers only. (Some archived webinars remain free for all to view.) Handouts are available only to webinar subscribers/members. Legacy webinar membership is currently $49.95/year. (Note: If you view a webinar, there is often a discount code word which will get you 10 percent off items from the store, including webinar memberships.) Webinar members get an additional 5 percent off when signed-in.

The Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) has released its 2022 webinar schedule with a notable change. The webinars, held the first Saturday and third Monday of the month, in the past were free to live viewers and handouts are included. As of January 2022, each webinar appears to have a $5.50 cost. After the live webinar, only SCGS members can view the archived webinars. SCGS membership is $40/year and includes other benefits. We are not sure if the $5.50/webinar fee is just for non-members or members as well. When we learn more we will let you know.

The Wisconsin State Genealogical Society has released its 2022 webinar schedule. The webinars are held the third Tuesday of the month at 8 p.m. ET and are free to live viewers and handouts are included. After the live webinar, only WSGS members can view the archived webinars. WSGS membership starts at $40/year as of January 1, 2022. (You can join for 2022 at the 2021 rate until December 31, 2021.)

The Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City, Utah, began broadcasting the genealogy classes held in the library about several years ago. Information about these free webinars are located at the FHL's wiki classes and webinars page on FamilySearch. The schedule for January through March 2022 has been posted. Sometimes additional webinars are added to the current month. Most of these webinars include handouts. Previously recorded webinars are listed under Past Webinars. (Scroll down the page to see them.) You also may find some archived in the FamilySearch Learning Center. Some highlights include several webinars/classes on using FamilySearch Family Tree, and starting genealogy focusing on various ethnic heritages as well as an introduction to using the Polish State Archives website.

The societies and company listed above are not the only online webinar opportunities out there. GeneaWebinars is a blog that hosts a calendar specializing in keeping track of the numerous genealogy webinars being held. About 35 organizers/hosts list their webinars in the calendar. Organizers/Hosts use a variety of webinar delivery systems from GoToWebinar to Google Hangouts to Twitter. Most entries have links taking you to the registration page for that webinar or the website of the host.

RootsTech 2022 Right Around the Corner
Another webinar learning opportunity is the annual RootsTech conference which once again will be completely virtual. Registration is already open for RootsTech 2022 which takes place March 3-5, 2022, and is completely free. Don't forget RootTech 2021 sessions are still viewable so if you haven't caught all you wanted to yet, you still can.

See you soon at Mt. Clemens Public Library!

It's Not Too Late! It's the 2021 Holiday Sale at Family Tree DNA until Dec. 31

Family Tree DNA is running its 2021 Holiday Sale through December 31, 2021, 11:50 p.m. E.T. So you can still save on a new DNA test, on upgrades to an existing test, and even on the Autosomal Transfer Unlock price of a DNA transfer of raw data from another testing company. This sale ends

Remember, shipping and taxes are extra which vary depending on where the test is shipped. From a while back the shipping cost to Michigan was about $12.95 for one kit which covers the receiving and sending the test.

New Service
FamilyFinder + myDNA Wellness*
(autosomal for male or female) regular price $119 ... NOW $69

Autosomal Transfer Unlock Fee (autosomal for male or female) regular price $19 ... NOW $9

Got an autosomal test at another genealogy/DNA testing company? You can transfer the raw data file (Ancestry DNA version 1 or 2; 23andMe version 3, 4 or 5; or MyHeritageDNA results received after March 1, 2019) to FTDNA to see what matches you have at Family Tree DNA. Expert Level. Note: formerly the Big Y-500 now the Big Y-700 includes the Y111 test which gets added to your cart as part of buying the Big Y-700.

There are a variety of upgrades on sale too for this Holiday Sale. See the chart below from Family Tree DNA. Remember, the upgrades available to your DNA tests depends on what you have already tested.

Family Tree DNA provides an ethnicity (admixture) report, list of DNA matches, chromosome browser and allows DNA matches to contact a match directly if that match allows it. Once tested, DNA samples are stored so that additional test types (upgrades) can be added if desired. Family Tree DNA is the only genealogy DNA testing company that offers all three DNA test types: autosomal, Y-DNA and mtDNA. No subscription is needed to see/use all the DNA matching features. See our previous post containing some Reminders and Cautions regarding changes with Family Tree DNA
warnings.

As a reminder, Family Tree DNA sometimes sells its autosomal DNAtest kits (called FamilyFinder) on Amazon.com and often at sale prices when it is having a sale so if you don't need a YDNA test buying from Amazon eliminates the shipping costs. At this time Family Tree DNA is selling its FamilyFinder test at the sale price of $49 on the Amazon website. When or if you do buy a kit on Amazon make sure the seller shown is FamilyTreeDNA fulfilled by Amazon and not sold by a third-party unauthorized seller. Non-Amazon Prime members get free shipping due to the total cost and because it is fulfilled by Amazon; Prime members just get quicker 2-day shipping for free.

Look for this before adding your item to your cart.

You must create an account prior to making a purchase. Or be logged in with an existing account. When making your purchase, if you want a pass (which starts immediately) select Order but if you want a voucher be sure to select Voucher. Purchases can be made using a credit card or PayPal. Passes and Vouchers do not automatically renew.

The Archion website is in German with some English translated website pages. You are able to browse the contents of the website for free meaning what is available. Uploaded digitized church books are shaded in green. If a location or book is not shaded in green than it is not yet uploaded. The forum boards are also free but you must be logged into the website and have the site in German (DE.)

The church books are organized first by the regional holding archive and the regional division and the parish location where you can then see what records types and time periods are available. At this time the digitized church records are mostly NOT electronically indexed so this is a browse and manually search like you would have done in the days of microfilm. And yes, the record images are in German in that old Schrift handwriting for the most part.

Here is a relatively current list of the provinces and archives included on the Archion.de website. Church books are added daily. Generally, in batches from three or so different archives each month. The monthly email newsletter usually informs what was recently added, what is currently being added, and what will be added next.

Getting Closer: AncestryDNA tests now $49, Other Bundle Prices Drop $10 Too

It's Getting Closer!

Ancestry has lowered its sale price on its AncestryDNA autosomal DNA test. It is now just $49 until November 29, 2021, at 11:59 p.m.

This is great news because we all know how much we can do with a saved $20 in-hand. Will we see Ancestry match the lowest prices on autosomal DNA tests that at least two other genealogy/DNA companies are offering this holiday season? We don't know but if it is going to happen it will likely be by flash sale so keep an eye out often because flash sales are short-term sales that do not last long -- sometimes just a few hours.

The AncestryDNA (autosomal) test regularly $99 is on sale for $49, a savings of 50%. Shipping and taxes are extra.

With the lowering the the AncestryDNA sale price that means the other DNA/Subscription bundles have lowered prices as well.

For just one dollar more, you can get the AncestryDNA test and a 3-month World Explorer subscription for $50 instead of the regular price of $100. But take note that this offer is for new and returning subscribers not for renewal of current subscriptions And, the subscription will automatically renew for $79.95 every three months unless you cancel at least two days before the renewal day using My Account or by contacting customer service.

Or for 89 dollars more, you can get the AncestryDNA test and a 3-month All Access subscription for $139 instead of the regular price of $199. But take note that this offer is for new and returning subscribers not for renewal of current subscriptions And, the subscription will automatically renew for $99.95 every three months unless you cancel at least two days before the renewal day using My Account or by contacting customer service.

AncestryDNA test results provide an ethnicity/admixture report, a AncestryDNA match list, shared matches, an internal member messaging system, and automatic updates to results. As well as some basic information from ThruLines which is Ancestry's replacement or next generation of New Ancestor Discoveries and DNA Circles. See the chart below.

Be aware that with an active paid subscription to Ancestry, there is fuller access to some DNA features such as all available information about people is shown in ThruLines; Matches' public family trees are viewable instead of just a preview of five generations; and up to seven generations of surnames instead of up to five surnames are shown for direct ancestor surnames from your matches' trees.

From Ancestry.com, a look at AncestryDNA with and without a data membership/subscription.

Access to these extra features end if you discontinue your data subscription. Some of these extra features require a public family tree linked to the AncestryDNA kit.

AncestryDNA Traits now gives a look at 26 personal traits. These traits are:  Birth Weight, Facial Hair Thickness, Omega-3, Photic Sneeze Reflex, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitaman E, Wisdom Teeth,
Asparagus Metabolite Detection, Bitter Sensitivity, Cilantro Aversion, Cleft Chin, Earlobe Shape, Earwax Type,
Eye Color, Finger Length, Freckles, Hair Color, Hair Strand Thickness, Hair Type, Iris Patterns, Male Hair Loss, Savory (Umami) Sensitivity, Skin Pigmentation, Sweet Sensitivity, and Unibrow. More traits may be available in the future at an additional cost. There may still be a Compare Feature and Around the World Feature. This add-on is regularly $20 and is on sale for $10.

From Ancestry.com

AncestryDNA is the one DNA/genealogy testing site that does not provide a chromosome browser tool which allows you to see the chromosome segments you share in common with a match which is one of the scientific ways to confirm a match is a true match and not a match by chance. To access a chromosome browser you would need to download your kit's DNA data and upload that data to one of the three companies that do provide a chromosome browser: MyHeritageDNA, Family Tree DNA, and the third-party GedMatch.com website.

We are not sure if the FREESHIPDNA code will work on the Ancestry website with this sale but it does not hurt to try it.

Do you want just the DNA test and do you want to save on shipping costs? Remember AncestryDNA also sells its test kits on Amazon.com and often at sale prices when it is having a sale. For this sale, as of now when this post was written the AncestryDNA test is listed at $49. So, in this case the sale price on the Amazon website is as good as the Ancestry website deal or a bit better because shipping is free.

BUT the AncestryDNA+Traits listed at $69 does NOT reflect the new sale pricing which would be $59 ($49 for the test and $10 for the Traits which is regularly $20.) So it is a close call on this bundle since the Ancestry website charges shipping. Non-Amazon Prime members get free shipping due to the total cost and because it is fulfilled by Amazon while Amazon Prime members just get quicker 2-day shipping for free. But be cautious and make sure the test kit you are buying is "sold by AncestryDNA Official and fulfilled by Amazon" to insure you are buying a genuine test kit. You will find this information just below the price. See the image below.

Look for this before adding your item to your cart.
