Ancestry 50% Off Sale until Nov. 27

Just a reminder: Check your websites of interest often during this holiday weekend. Sales can pop-up (Flash) that are brief or if you are lucky they last a bit longer. Because MCGG members often ask about this sale in particular, we are making this post.

Ancestry is having its 50% off sale until November 27.

Get 50% off Ancestry Gift memberships. You have a choice of either 6 months or 1 year and either the U.S., World or All-Access subscription. Remember these are for recipients who currently do not have an active subscription. When you make the purchase, you pick the start date within a specified time period. So if you don't have a current, active subscription you can gift yourself.

The other option is to save 50% or more on AncestryDNA tests. There are three options: just the test; or for new or those without a current active subscription the test and a World Explorer Membership for $1; or two tests and All-Access Membership. These memberships will renew every three months until you cancel.

Also, in general you save more by purchasing a longer-term subscription. So a 1-year or 6-month saves you more than paying monthly. But also consider if you only research in the winter months than it makes more sense to align your subscription term with when you plan to do genealogy research.

Happy Thanksgiving!

First, as the title of this post says, Happy Thanksgiving. Thank your T-day cooks and for those not cooking give your cooks some help with today's set-up and clean-up. Whether your meal and day is traditional or non-traditional, enjoy it!

Second, it is that time of year again for huge seasonal savings. Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday.

Normally, you would see post after post in this spot letting you know of the savings here, there and everywhere. The savings are still here, there and everywhere. But if you are looking for a particular genealogy or technology product or service, go to that website and look.

Want to know what the savings were last year or the year before? Use the labels on this website -- go to the prior year then November and look at the posts for last year. Or, click on the label for a product/service to see all the posts for that service. For example, MyHeritageDNA will bring up our prior posts which almost always involve reporting on a sale. So, when you go to the MyHeritage website you would clearly see that the current sale is its lowest price at $33. (Sale ends tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 24, 2023.)

Here is a tip. Use those shopping lists. It may seem intrusive but by adding an item to a shopping list, you can often see when the price of an item lowers. There are also price comparison tools out there too.

And don't forget to check the various websites often during this time. Sometimes there are Flash Sales that are not widely advertised. So, it can pay to be on a website's emailing list.

Free Access FindMyPast Websites November 9-13, 2023

FindMyPast websites (like FindMyPast.com) are having a free access weekend in honor of Veteran's Day/Remembrance Weekend. From November 9 to November 13, 2023, there is free access with some exclusions.

Just sign in with an existing user account or create one if you have not already done so. The easiest way is to perform a search and then create an account or sign into your existing free account when asked to do so.

Not too long ago we were sharing information on the Library of Michigan Library Card that is available to any Michigan resident or student. We realized one of the link had changed so we thought we would update everyone.

To apply for your first Library of Michigan Library Card or to renew a card you had previously applied for in-person or online (like during the pandemic) use this link to Get a Library Card which has not changed.

Fold3 Free Access in Honor of Veterans Day through Nov. 12, 2023

It is the 76th Anniversary of the first Veterans Day Celebration, started in a small community as a day to celebrate all veterans regardless of war, both living and dead, which eventually became a national celebration.

Fold3 is giving free access to its site through Sunday, November 12, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. MT.

Just register for the basic Fold3 membership which is free with no credit card required. If you already have a free Fold3 basic membership, just sign into the website. (You do not need to sign up for a 7-day free trial which requires a credit card.) Another way to do this is to just start a search and then click to view an image (marked free) and then the correct registration link to a free basic membership option will come up.

Lowest Price Ever Returns to MyHeritageDNA

We will try to highlight what we have found but may not write a post about all we have seen for this holiday season. Yes, the holiday season is here. Honestly, it was here before Halloween. Our best advice is if you are interested in a website or product, check on that website/product frequently just in case they hold a flash sale. If you can put a watch on an item or add it to a shopping list, you'll see and learn when the price drops (or raises.)

MyHeritageDNA
MyHeritage started its DNA Sale early.  MyHeritageDNA (autosomal) tests now regularly $89 each are on sale for $36 each (plus taxes and shipping) which matches the lowest price ever. Orders of two or more DNA kits receive free shipping. This sale ends November 7, 2023, at 11:59 p.m.

MyHeritageDNA is becoming a "must be at" for its DNA tools. Its customer base is more international. MyHeritage has chromosome browser feature and made its internal member messaging feature free. It also offers an ethnicity/admixture report and a list of DNA matches. No data subscription is needed to see/use all the DNA matching features including its AutoCluster feature. A few additional features were added earlier this year and last year -- like an update to its ethnicity estimates and genetic groups including viewing the genetic groups of your match and seeing what you have in common.

 

With this sale there are two options for the same sale price. Just the MyHeritageDNA test OR the MyHeritageDNA test along with a 30-Day Complete Free Trial of the websites data collections and photo tools. But note that after the 30 days, the complete subscription will auto-renew unless you cancel the auto-renewal a couple days before the renewal date. For this initial renewal you will get 50% off ($149 instead of $299) the first year and additional years will be at the current regular price.

 

As a reminder, MyHeritageDNA also sells its test kits on Amazon.com and often at sale prices when it is having a sale. However, for this sale the MyHeritageDNA test is NOT on sale on Amazon. It is listed at regular price. If you do find a sale at some point in the future, make sure the seller shown is MyHeritage fulfilled by Amazon and not sold by a third-party unauthorized seller. Non-Amazon Prime members get free shipping due to the total cost and because it is fulfilled by Amazon; prime members just get quicker 2-day shipping for free. 

Look for this before adding your item to your cart.
