MCGG February Friday Meeting Requires Virtual Attendee Advanced Registration

We wanted to remind everyone that our February Friday program requires advanced registration for virtual attendance. No registration is needed for in-person attendance. So if you plan to attend virutally be sure to register so you can attend an informative and interesting program

MCGG Friday group meets in-person (hybrid) Friday, February 9, 2023, at 1 p.m. in the Auditorium B/C of the Mount Clemens Public Library. Our topic is ... 10 Million Names presented by Cynthia Evans, 10 Million Names Research Director.

10 Million Names, is a new initiative at American Ancestors dedicated to recovering the names of the estimated ten million men, women, and children of African descent who were enslaved in pre- and post-colonial America (specifically, the territory that would become the United States) between the 1500s and 1865. The collaborative project seeks to amplify the voices of people who have been telling their family stories for centuries, connect researchers and data partners with people seeking answers to family history questions, and expand access to data, resources, and information about enslaved African Americans.

The presentation will inform attendees about this project.

For this February 9 meeting, we will require virtual attendees to register in advance. You can do so here with this registration link. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. The meeting begins at 1 p.m. In-person attendees do not need to pre-register.

Our plan is that our meetings will be hybrid meaning the meeting will be in-person with a virtual Zoom option. The Zoom meeting link (or registration link) will now be found on our Southeast Michigan Genealogy Events Calendar and our Facebook page. Members will receive a reminder email with the Zoom invite or a reminder that registration is required for the Friday meeting.

Yes, It is true we (MCGG) have hit our Golden Year. The Macomb County Genealogy Group has been meeting for 50 years at the Mount Clemens Public Library.

While our meetings have changed a bit over the years, they still come down to sharing and learning this wonderful hobby of genealogy and family history.

We are now hosting hybrid meetings which have mostly worked out. Though we are constantly tweaking them to make them better each time.

See our Let's Talk and MCGG Friday meeting pages for the actual 2024 Winter/Spring schedule PDF. The above image of the schedule is just a low-res image.

MCPL's Local History & Genealogy Room Now Open Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Catching up on the news ... Did you know that for 2024 the Mount Clemens Public Library's Local History & Genealogy Room is now open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. -- no appointment needed.

So, after a long week of working, wrangling kids/grandkids (or doing both) you can carve out some time for yourself to unwind researching your family history in a relatively quiet space devoted to local history and genealogy. (Cheers of triumph have been known to happen.) Bring a family research buddy or, maybe ironically hide away here away from your family to work on your family.

Our January Let's Talk...Genealogy Meeting is This Wednesday at 6:30 pm

This Wednesday our  MCGG Let's Talk...Genealogy discussion group meets in-person (hybrid*) Wednesday, January 10, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. in the Local History & Genealogy Room of the Mount Clemens Public Library. Our topic is ... Where Do I Go From Here?

Bring research questions, brick walls, or new finds to share with the group! Let's share our challenges, maybe someone will have an idea to solve them.

Why is this our most popular discussion topic? Because it is your opportunity to get your questions or problems hopefully answered. But not just from one point of view but often several. And, when you have a new genealogy find you have like-minded genealogists who understand that satisfaction when maybe family members do not.

*Our plan is that these will be hybrid meetings meaning the meeting will be in-person with a virtual Zoom option. The Zoom meeting link will now be found on our Southeast Michigan Genealogy Events Calendar and our Facebook page. Members will receive a reminder email with the Zoom invite.

New attendees are always welcome.

3-Day Upgrade Sale on Software MacKiev Family Tree Maker 2019 Ends January 8

Did you wait too long to decide on upgrading to the most current version of Family Tree Maker 2019 back at the end of 2023/beginning of 2024? If yes, you have another chance.  Software MacKiev is having an Upgrade Sale for three days on Family Tree Maker -- the email went out Saturday to those without FTM2019 on their newsletter list so tomorrow (Monday) is the last day. What's the deal?

If you upgrade to FTM2019 now, for the next two years if a new version comes out you get it for free. (Many companies only give new purchasers an offer like this if they buy an application just three to six months prior to an version upgrade.)

Currently, FTM2019 is the only version that can sync a FTM tree file with an Ancestry member online tree. A fix was said to be in the works for Family Tree Maker 2017 to sync again also but it has not happened yet and that software is 6/7 years old. With FTM2019 being 4/5 years old we guessed for the last sale (just us guessing) that a new version may be in the works considering the brand will be celebrating 35 years in 2024.

Click this link to go to the storefront with this upgrade sale.

There is a neat chart here showing what the various versions of Family Tree Maker do and do not offer you. Learn more about the features of the latest version of FTM2019 here.

There are additional sale prices on other items in the Family Tree Maker Gift Collection. Some are the same deals as in the last sale, while some deals have gone down a little bit in savings.
