MCGG Releases its October Meeting Topics -- Join Us on Oct. 4 & Oct. 9!

The Macomb County Genealogy Group releases its October 2024 meeting topics. Please note that we have released our full 2024 Fall Season schedule.

MCGG Friday group meets in-person (hybrid)
Friday, October 4, 2024, at 1 p.m.
in the Auditorium B/C of the Mount Clemens Public Library. Our topic is ... A.I. in Your Genealogy Research Today
presented by Lisa Eschenburg.

Don't worry about all the technical aspects of Artificial Intelligence, this isn't that presentation. After a brief definition and pointing out some of the various ways to directly access A.I., we will cover a variety of ways we as genealogists are already dealing with AI in our genealogical research though you may or may not have realized it. Then you will learn some things you can do with the help of A.I.

MCGG Let's Talk...Genealogy discussion group meets in-person (hybrid) Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 6:30 p.m.
in the Local History & Genealogy Room of the Mount Clemens Public Library. Our topic is ... Exploring the Digital Michigan Newspaper Portal on Clarke Historical Library's Website.

Let’s share our tips and ask our questions regarding using this site, especially to explore our digitized Macomb County newspapers.

Our plan is that our meetings will be hybrid meaning the meeting will be in-person with a virtual Zoom option. The Zoom meeting link (or registration link) will now be found on our Southeast Michigan Genealogy Events Calendar and our Facebook page. The link will usually be added the night before or morning of the meeting. Members will receive a reminder email with the Zoom invite or a reminder that registration is required for a meeting.

New attendees are always welcome.

MCGG Releases 2024 Fall Schedule -- Join Us at Our Meetings -- Everyone Welcome!

The Macomb County Genealogy Group has been meeting for 51 years at the Mount Clemens Public Library.

While our meetings have changed a bit over the years, they still come down to sharing and learning this wonderful hobby of genealogy and family history. We are still hosting hybrid meetings which have mostly worked out though we are constantly tweaking them to make them better each time.

See our Let's Talk and MCGG Friday meeting pages for the actual 2024 Fall schedule PDF. The above image of the schedule is just a low-res image.

MCPL Local History & Genealogy Dept. Hosts Programs on the Civil War, Michigan Made Military Products and Tony Borroughs on Black Genealogy

Mount Clemens Public Library's Local History & Genealogy Department is hosting some events that might interest our members and other genealogists.

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. in Auditorium BC
Michigan in the Civil War
This presentation is unique in that it develops a month by month timeline of events in Michigan and at the Eastern battlefields. At the beginning of the war, in April of 1861, Michigan had about 1200 men and a few officers in the State Militia. By January of 1865, nearly 89,000 Michigan soldiers had served in the war. This program, in 77 minutes, tells true stories about Michigan people and Governor Blair’s search for troops to meet Lincoln’s request. The music and sounds created at the reenactment events make this a very special program relating to Michigan’s role in the Civil War. Presented by Al and Dave Eicher of Program Source International.

On Monday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. in Auditorium BC
The Michigan Military Technical and Historical Society presents on 10 Military Things You Didn't Know were made in Michigan.

On Tues., October 1, at 6 p.m. in Auditorium BC
Black Genealogy Basics with Tony Burroughs
How to get started doing African American family history with author of "Black Roots," Tony Burroughs.

Mount Clemens Public Library's Local History & Genealogy Room is Open

We wanted to make sure that everyone has heard that the Local History & Genealogy Room at Mount Clemens Public Library reopened a couple days ago, on Tuesday, September 3.

The leak and subsequent damage to the wall (not to the materials or equipment) has been fixed and remediated.

Just before this happened during the summer the room received some new equipment, a new scanning station that is similar to the BookScan Station but with some new capabilities. It is still touch-screen operated. It still has two scanners -- an 11"x17" flatbed scanner (with 600 PPI optical resolution) and a document feeder scanner. But this scanning station uses ScanEZ software. Please be aware that the quick guide sheet next to the station needs to be updated so until it is updated, follow the prompts on the screen and/or ask the room staff for some help.

What new capabilities you ask? Well, there is now Vivid-Pix software to help you restore photos and documents. And, there is text translation to a few different languages. So, enjoy the new equipment!

And, come back to your Local History & Genealogy Room to explore all its resources and dig into your genealogy research.

MCGG Releases its September Meeting Topics -- Join Us!

The Macomb County Genealogy Group releases its September 2024 meeting topics. We are hard at work on topics for the rest of the 2024 Fall Season and will release our full season schedule as soon as we can.

MCGG Let's Talk...Genealogy discussion group meets in-person (hybrid) Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. in the Local History & Genealogy Room of the Mount Clemens Public Library. Our topic is ... Where Do I Go From Here?

Bring research questions, brick walls, or new finds to share with the group! Let's share our challenges, maybe someone will have an idea to solve them.

Why is this our most popular discussion topic? Because it is your opportunity to get your questions or problems hopefully answered. But not just from one point of view but often several. And, when you have a new genealogy find you have like-minded genealogists who understand that satisfaction when maybe family members do not.

MCGG Friday group meets in-person (hybrid) Friday, September 13, 2024, at 1 p.m.
in the Auditorium B/C of the Mount Clemens Public Library. Our topic is ... Volunteer Firemen.
Where There is Smoke ... There is Fire presented by Beverly Bishop.

Where there is smoke, there is Fire! And water too! Early townspeople used bucket brigades (some gifts from insurance companies), then manual hose reels, horses, steam powered trucks followed by gas engines. Fire insurance was sold by the women of the town, and fire fighters were the local business men. See a Sanborn Fire Map, Gamewell Alarm, and fire run data from books and an Index. Come along for a ride in the exciting conflagrations where your family may have participated.
