Ancestry.ca (that is the Ancestry Canada website) is having a sale on its AncestryDNA test until July 4, 2017. Note: this is the same test as in the United States but different costs because of a different country.

NEHGS Bookstore Offers Holiday Bundles

The Bookstore at the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) website, AmericanAncestors, has released its 2016 Holiday Bundles.

The more than fifty bundles cover a variety of topics which vary in size and price. All offer savings. You can explore them in the online bookstore or from an alphabetical listing by bundle topic.

Prices are good thru December 31, 2016, while supplies last. NEHGS recommends that if you are purchasing a bundle as a gift, choose UPS shipping because the media rate of the USPS may not make it in time for the holiday. Questions regarding bundles or shipping can be sent to the bookstore's email. You can also order by phone, 1-888-296-3447.

AmericanAncestors Adds Images of The Boston Transcript's Genealogy Column

AmericanAncestors.org the website of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) has added images of The Boston Transcript's Genealogy column.

Currently covering 1911 to 1941 (the column ran from 1906 to 1941) the collection is browsable only not searchable. The tip is to use the American Genealogical-Biographical Index (AGBI) on Ancestry.com as a search aid to find the newspaper year/month/date that an ancestral surname (ancestor) appeared. Also many issue from the 1850s to 1910s are on Google News Archive.

The genealogy column consisted of queries from across the country dealing with ancestral questions regarding ancestors in many places and time periods -- not just New England. These queries were answered by readers and others too.

If you are not a member of NEHGS or a subscriber to Ancestry.com, just visit the Mount Clemens Public Library's Genealogy and Local History Room where both subscriptions are available for library patron use.

AmericanAncestors.org Opens Five Databases for Free Access in February

AmericanAncestors.org website has announced it's free databases for the month February. Since it is Black History Month, three of the databases are focused African American ancestors.

These databases are:

• Hampden County, MA: Black Families in Hampden County, 1650-1865
• People of Color in the Massachusetts State Census, 1855-1865
• Massachusetts: 1855 State Census
• Massachusetts: 1865 State Census
• Free Negro Heads of Families in the United States in 1830

The New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS), which operates the AmericanAncestors website, has also created a guide to two of the databases and a case study called Search Spotlight: African American Records.

Happy New Year! Say Hello to year 2016 ... and Hello to the Year's First Snow

Hello 2016 and Snow

We hope your holidays were merry and bright and that this year is a good one.

As far as genealogy goes this will be a year of ... something ... for Family Tree Maker users. The last year of support and perhaps a year of transition for some.

Whatever your genealogy project(s) for the year -- be it preparing to switch genealogy programs; organizing; scanning; interviewing; working on a new line or break wall; preparing for and taking a research trip; or hunkering down to finally write that book -- good luck!

Whether you are "hibernating" for the winter or escaping to warmer climates for a short while, don't forget to keep an eye out for savings and free access offers. (Don't we all like a deal.)

It's October 31st. The last day to explore the free access databases opened in honor of Family History Month at AmericanAncestors.org which is the New England Historic Genealogical Society's website.

Though we say goodbye to those databases at AmericanAncestors.org we can say hello to free access to all cemetery databases until November 7.

Again, to access the free databases at AmericanAncestors.org, you simply need to become a guest user using the Guest Registration page. If you are already a registered guest user (or a NEHGS member), simply sign in to access this offer.

The Latest AmericanAncestors.org Sunday Database: Early Families of New England

As we told you earlier the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) is giving free access to a new database on its website AmericanAncestors.org each Sunday this month in celebration of Family History Month.

Each database is free from the Sunday it is opened until the end of October. To take advantage of this free offer you simply need to register as a guest user or sign in with your NEHGS member login.

This week's free database is: "Early Families of New England." You can learn about this project here.

The database opened last week was "Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to N.E. 1620-1633, Vols. I-III."

The other two "free access" databases released earlier this month are: "Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841-1910" and "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register."
