We just learned that the next season —
Season 10 —of Who Do You Think You Are? will begin on Monday, May 21, at 9 p.m. ET on the cable television channel, The Learning Channel aka TLC.
Celebrity guests announced for this season's six episodes are: Hillary Duff, Jean Smart, John Cryer, Laverne Cox, Megan Mullally, and Molly Shannon.
Everyone
has different television delivery/provider systems. Use your television
provider's schedule system to find the TLC channel number on your
provider system and to learn when the show will be re-aired again.
Also, the episodes are usually available on theTLC website pagesometime
after they have aired. So if you don't have TLC you should be able to
watch the show on your computer over the internet. You can keep up with the show in its Facebook page even if you are not on FaceBook.
The Lapeer County Genealogical Society is still without a website so as a courtesy MCGG would like to let you know that LCGS in conjunction with Mark Morton of Gravestone Guardians of Ohio will host its 6th Annual Cemetery Preservation Workshop on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Lum Cemetery in Arcadia Township, Michigan.
Lum Cemetery, also known as Arcadia Township Cemetery as well as DeGroat Cemetery, is located on Lum Road/County Road 7 just west of the village of Lum.
This all-day (9 a.m. - 5 p.m., weather permitting) workshop is full of educational instruction with hands on training. Some of the topics to be covered include: headstone cleaning without harming the stone; re-setting a stone which as broken off and fallen over; re-positioning one that is dangerously leaning or in a sunken condition; re-leveling a stone and reconstructing a broken headstone. Probing for a headstone is on the list too. Mr. Morton has hosted previous cemetery workshops with LCGS. The cost of the all day workshop is just $40 if registered before May 5, 2018. After that date, the fee is $45.00. Reservations are required and the fee is non-refundable. Whether you are a municipality struggling with your local cemetery or an individual that has the desire to learn this art, you will not want to miss this class.

AncestryDNA Though AncestryDNA recently ended its reduced pricing returning to its regular price of $99, the autosomal DNA test is at a low sale price of $59 plus taxes and shipping until 11:59 p.m. April 29, 2018. That is a savings of about 40 percent.

tested, DNA samples are stored so that additional test types (upgrades)
can be added if desired. Family Tree DNA is the only genealogy DNA
testing company that offers all three DNA test types: autosomal, Y-DNA
and mtDNA. No subscription is needed to see/use all the DNA matching
features.
Family Tree DNA also offers autosomal DNA transfers. So
if you have already tested at another genealogy DNA testing company you
can upload your RAW DNA data to get your test into another "pool" of
potential DNA matches. The transfer is initially free which lets you see
all your matches and use the FamilyFinder-Matrix to compare up to 10
matches. To access additional FamilyFinder tools the cost is just $19 to
unlock them.

see/use all the DNA matching features.
MyHeritageDNA is still offering free DNA transfers
so if you already tested at another DNA testing company you can
download your RAW DNA data from that site and upload it to MyHeritage.

It is also an autosomal DNA test that males and females can take. The regular price of the LivingDNA test is $159 but is on sale for National DNA Day for $79.99. Taxes and Shipping are extra. According to the website, shipping takes 7-10 working days to get to the USA, longer during the holiday season, is is about $9.95. LivingDNA offers an ethnicity estimate (80 world regions including 21 in Britain and Ireland); a general look at your Y-DNA haplogroup (if male) and mtDNA haplogroup; and a view of your ancestry in the context of history and the migration of them. LivingDNA results are updated for free as the system and technology are updated. Later this year it is expected that Family Matches (seeing your DNA matches among those who have tested) will be released. If you have a lot of English and Irish ancestry the more detailed regions for Britain and Ireland in the ethnicity may be of interest to you. The company is still building itself so at a sale price it may be worth a try perhaps you will find a clue to direct your search.
Where to Test? Testing in
as many "ponds" as possible is the advice genetic genealogists often
give because you never know where someone has tested. Sale times and DNA
data transfers are ways to make it easier to fish in multiple ponds to

If the tested person (the person whose spit it is) does not have any other test at FTDNA follow the path for a new customer. If the tested person already has another test type (Y-DNA or mtDNA) at Family Tree DNA follow the steps for an existing customer. After uploading your data, you will receive and email with login information. You can take advantage of this sale once your initial data transfer has been processed which sometimes takes less than a day to 2 days depending on the volume of transfers. So if you decide to do a data transfer do it soon so you can take advantage of the near half-off sale price.

will continue this series started in November 2017 (with AncestryDNA)
by reviewing some ways to make sense of those matches, this time
focusing on MyHeritage and 23andMe.

do not have to have attended the earlier rounds of this series to attend
this one. The principles covered can be applied to any of the testing
companies though the how varies a little.

There is almost no question that AncestryDNA will have sales in the future like for various holidays and perhaps even for DNA Day which is April 25, this year. For your reference, sale prices in the past year have dipped down to $69 and even $59 occasionally.
AncestryDNA has the largest "pool" of people who have purchased autosomal DNA tests. It provides ethnicity/admixture reports, a match list, matches in common, and an internal member messaging system. It does not provide a chromosome browser tool. Also, if you do not have a data/records membership subscription you will not have access to some DNA features/tools such as member trees and the internal messaging system. Ancestry offers an AncestryDNAInsights subscription for about $59/year as of 2017 which would give access to all of the DNA tools but not any data/records.
At present, Ancestry is also having a 50 percent off sale for New Members on its 6-month US Discovery data subscription ($49 instead of $99 regular price) and its 6-month World Explorer data subscription ($99 instead of $209 regular price.) Another method we have seen is that those have done an AncestryDNA test (but do not keep an Ancestry data subscription year-round) will sign up for a month subscription in order to more fully investigate their DNA matches (see the trees) and to make contact with matches. They will then cancel at the end of the month (before auto-billing kicks in the next month) and do the same thing again a couple or several months later
