New Michigan Database on Ancestry.com -- Michigan Marriage Records 1867-1952

Michigan genealogists get your bunny slippers (and blankets -- it's cold outside) ready, there is a new Michigan database of digitized original records as of today. Ancestry.com just released: Michigan, Marriage Records, 1867 - 1952.

Here are the details. The online index goes up to 1952 but you will only find actual images of the records up to the year 1938 due to Michigan laws. Prior to this, FamilySearch.org had images of marriage records up to 1925. That means there are now 13 more years of images available and 27 more years of index and transcribed records.

Hopefully, the posting of the additional images of the Michigan Death Certificates (up to 1938) on SeekingMichigan.org is closer at hand? (Is everyone crossing your fingers and toes? You can click the mouse or swipe the touchpad with crossed fingers ... maybe with some practice.)

Another interesting database collection added last week on Ancestry.com is the Canada, Quaker Meeting Records, 1786-1988. The database contains digitized black and white images of the various meeting records from the microfilm copies AND an online index. The meetings include one in Lenawee County, Michigan. Unfortunately, we've seen a problem with the search features for this database. Trying to narrow down the search parameters to a specific meeting or area does not seem work no matter which field you try to use. There is not a field specifically for meeting location. Hopefully, it will be addressed soon. Until then you'll need to wade through all the results manually to find the ones for the meeting you seek. Of course, don't forget to investigate the others, you might find something surprising.

Hey Ancestry.com, can we get the New York Quaker Meeting Records like this also and not just the couple certificates currently online?

Good Luck searching everyone!

Know Someone Interested in Genealogy? We're holding a workshop ... Beginning Genealogy: It Starts with You

Flyer in PDF format
On Saturday, March 28, from 9:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Macomb County Genealogy Group is holding a workshop, Beginning Genealogy: It Starts with You, in the auditorium of the Mount Clemens Public Library.

This workshop for beginners will teach the basics for a sound foundation to start your genealogy.

So if you know anyone who has expressed an interest in starting his/her genealogy tell them about this workshop. We'll teach them how to start. There is no cost to attend.

If you have been doing your genealogy for a while, this workshop more than likely will be too basic for you. Instead see one of our volunteers in the genealogy/local history room for some help or guidance.

Interested beginners can register for the workshop through the Mt. Clemens Public Library's Events Calendar. Just find the month and day (March 28) and fill out the registration information. Be sure to provide your email address so you can receive the handouts which will be sent in PDF format for you to print out at home to bring with you.

RootsTech 2015 and FGS Conference is Next Week! Are you ready to Learn?

It is almost that time again. RootsTech, a genealogy and technology conference held in Salt Lake City, Utah, takes place next week, Feb. 12 to 14. This year for the first time, RootsTech 2015 will be held with the Federation of Genealogical Societies national conference. The two conferences will share a venue, keynote speakers, activities and an Expo Hall while each conference has its own run of speakers/classes.

If you are thinking why does this matter if I am not planning to go, let us tell you that it does matter.

One of the great features of the RootsTech conference is that selected speakers/classes as well as the keynote speakers that start out each day are Live Streamed. That means you can "attend" some classes without leaving home (or removing your bunny slippers) by simply turning on your computer going to the RootsTech page and watching as a virtual attendee. (It's even okay if you opt to stay in your PJs. You can see them, they can't see you.)

Did I mention that the Live Streamed classes are free? Well, they are and many of the speakers are nationally known for speaking on genealogy/history topics.

Syllabus materials are available now for a majority of the classes. Unlike last year, there is no option to download all the materials in a single compressed file. You have to go to each individual class listing, click on the link to that syllabus and select the download/save button in your PDF viewer.

Which classes will be Live Streamed Feb. 12 to 14? We don't know yet but as soon as we hear, we will let you know.

Do not worry if you have plans already and can't hide out at home in front of the computer for a few days. The Live Streamed classes will be recorded and put on the RootsTech video archive page for viewing later. (Also, for free.) In fact, you can still catch some of the recorded classes from RootsTech 2014.

So remember to visit the RootsTech website or check back here to learn which classes will be part of the Live Stream.
