DNA Tests on Sale for DNA Day 2018

National DNA Day is April 25, 2018, and sales of DNA test kits are here! Get your or a relative's spit ready!

AncestryDNA
Though AncestryDNA recently ended its reduced pricing returning to its regular price of $99, the autosomal DNA test is at a low sale price of $59 plus taxes and shipping until 11:59 p.m. April 29, 2018. That is a savings of about 40 percent.

AncestryDNA without a data/records membership subscription provides an ethnicity estimate, migrations, DNA matches, contacting matches, automatic updates to results, and shared matches. AncestryDNA with a data/records membership subscription also gives you New Ancestor Discoveries, DNA Circles, Shared Ancestor Hints, Full access to matches' public trees, List of surnames in matches' trees, and list of birth locations in matches' trees. AncestryDNA does not provide a chromosome browser tool.

Don't have an Ancestry data/records subscription? Ancestry offers an AncestryDNA Insights subscription for about $59/year which would give access to all of the DNA tools but not any data/records but you must ca

We are not sure if the FREESHIPDNA code will work with this sale but it does not hurt to try it.

Remember, AncestryDNA also sells its test kits on Amazon.com and at sale prices when it is having a sale. Non-AmazonPrime members get free shipping due to the total cost and because it is fulfilled by Amazon; prime members just get quicker 2-day shipping for free.

FamilyTree DNA
At Family Tree DNA the DNA Day 2018 sale runs until April 28, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Shipping and taxes are extra which vary depending on where the test is shipped. From a while back the shipping cost to Michigan was about $12.95 for one kit which covers the receiving and sending the test.

FamilyFinder (autosomal for male or female) regular price $79 ... now $49 (That is 40 percent off!)
FamilyFinder and Y-37 bundle (for one male) regular price $248 ... now $179
FamilyFinder and Y-67 bundle (for one male) regular price $347 ... now $249
FamilyFinder and mtFull Sequence bundle (for one male or female) regular price $278 ... now $189
FamilyFinder with Y-67 and mtFull Sequence bundle (for one male) regular price $546 ... now $398
mtFull Sequence (for one male or female) regular price $199 ... now $149
Y-37 (for one male) regular price $139 ... now $169
Y-67 (for one male) regular price $268 ... now $209

Family Tree DNA provides an ethnicity (admixture) report, list of DNA matches, chromosome browser and allows DNA matches to contact a match directly if that match allows it. Once tested, DNA samples are stored so that additional test types (upgrades) can be added if desired. Family Tree DNA is the only genealogy DNA testing company that offers all three DNA test types: autosomal, Y-DNA and mtDNA. No subscription is needed to see/use all the DNA matching features.

Family Tree DNA also offers autosomal DNA transfers. So if you have already tested at another genealogy DNA testing company you can upload your RAW DNA data to get your test into another "pool" of potential DNA matches. The transfer is initially free which lets you see all your matches and use the FamilyFinder-Matrix to compare up to 10 matches. To access additional FamilyFinder tools the cost is just $19 to unlock them.

Family Tree DNA currently accepts autosomal transfers from:
  • Ancestry DNA (V1 and V2 chips)
  • 23andME (V3 and V4 chips) but not its V5 chip in use since Aug. 2017
  • MyHeritageDNA (Transfers from kits tested directly at MyHeritage are completely free with no unlock fee.)
One thing to note is that transfers of tests on the AncestryDNA V2 chip and the 23andMe V4 chip receive all but the most speculative matches (6th cousin to remote cousins) because these chips are not fully compatible.

23andMe
For this year's DNA Day, 23andMe has put its tests on sale for 30 percent off. The Ancestry Service (autosomal DNA test) regularly $99 is now $69. The Health+Ancestry Service regularly $199 is now $139. Taxes and Shipping are extra.

23andMe provides an ethnicity (admixture) report, list of DNA matches, chromosome browser and an internal member messaging system. No subscription is needed to see/use all the DNA matching features.

23andMe also sells its test kits on Amazon.com and at sale prices when they are having a sale. Non-AmazonPrime members get free shipping due to the total cost and because it is fulfilled by Amazon; prime members just get quicker 2-day shipping for free.

MyHeritage
MyHeritage has also put its autosomal DNA test on sale too. MyHeritageDNA (autosomal) tests regularly $99 each are on sale for $69 each until April 25, 2018. Shipping and taxes are extra.

MyHeritageDNA is one of the newer players in the DNA and genealogy testing niche. Its customer base is more international. As of earlier this year, the company has added a chromosome browser feature and has made its internal member messaging feature free. It also offers an ethnicity/admixture report and a list of DNA matches. No data subscription is needed to see/use all the DNA matching features.

MyHeritageDNA is still offering free DNA transfers so if you already tested at another DNA testing company you can download your RAW DNA data from that site and upload it to MyHeritage. MyHeritageDNA accepts raw DNA data from Family Tree DNA, AncestryDNA (V1 and V2 version chips), and 23andMe (V2, V3 and V4 chips.)

MyHeritageDNA can also be found on Amazon.com sold and shipped by Amazon. The current price (as of today) is similar to the current sale price. Non-AmazonPrime members get free shipping due to the total cost and because it is fulfilled by Amazon; prime members just get quicker 2-day shipping for free.

LivingDNA
LivingDNA is a newer genealogy testing company based in the United Kingdom. It is also an autosomal DNA test that males and females can take. The regular price of the LivingDNA test is $159 but is on sale for National DNA Day for $79.99. Taxes and Shipping are extra. According to the website, shipping takes 7-10 working days to get to the USA, longer during the holiday season, is is about $9.95.

LivingDNA offers an ethnicity estimate (80 world regions including 21 in Britain and Ireland); a general look at your Y-DNA haplogroup (if male) and mtDNA haplogroup; and a view of your ancestry in the context of history and the migration of them. LivingDNA results are updated for free as the system and technology are updated. Later this year it is expected that Family Matches (seeing your DNA matches among those who have tested) will be released.

If you have a lot of English and Irish ancestry the more detailed regions for Britain and Ireland in the ethnicity may be of interest to you. The company is still building itself so at a sale price it may be worth a try perhaps you will find a clue to direct your search.

Where to Test?
Testing in as many "ponds" as possible is the advice genetic genealogists often give because you never know where someone has tested. Sale times and DNA data transfers are ways to make it easier to fish in multiple ponds to find your DNA matches.

Sale on Autosomal Transfers to Famly Tree DNA thru April 16, 2018

Have you tested your or a family member's autosomal DNA at AncestryDNA, 23andMe or MyHeritage? Would you like to get that DNA with permission where needed into another DNA Match Pool of another DNA testing company?

Family Tree DNA offers Autosomal DNA transfers. So if you have already tested at another genealogy DNA testing company you can upload your RAW DNA data to get your test into another "pool" of potential DNA matches. The transfer is initially free which lets you see all your matches and use the FamilyFinder-Matrix to compare up to 10 matches.

Normally to access additional FamilyFinder tools (chromosome browser, myOrigins, ancientOrigins) the cost is $19 to unlock them. (Which is significantly less than the cost of an autosomal test.) But now thru Monday, April 16, 2018, you can save $9 with code ATULAPR18 making the cost of unlocking your transfer just $10.

See the Family Tree DNA Learning Center for information on how to download your DNA raw data from where you have tested and how to upload it to Family Tree DNA. If the tested person (the person whose spit it is) does not have any other test at FTDNA follow the path for a new customer. If the tested person already has another test type (Y-DNA or mtDNA) at Family Tree DNA follow the steps for an existing customer. After uploading your data, you will receive and email with login information. You can take advantage of this sale once your initial data transfer has been processed which sometimes takes less than a day to 2 days depending on the volume of transfers. So if you decide to do a data transfer do it soon so you can take advantage of the near half-off sale price.

Wednesday, April 11, at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Mount Clemens Public Library is this month's MCGG Let's Talk...Genealogy meeting. Our topic for the night is ... DNA Tested ... Now What? -- Round 3.

We will continue this series started in November 2017 (with AncestryDNA) by reviewing some ways to make sense of those matches, this time focusing on MyHeritage and 23andMe.

You do not have to have attended the earlier rounds of this series to attend this one. The principles covered can be applied to any of the testing companies though the how varies a little.

New attendees are always welcome.

Price Change for AncestryDNA

AncestryDNA's long-running reduced price of $79 it set to return to the $99 regular price on Monday, April 9, 2018. So you have until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 8, to purchase an AncestryDNA test kit for that reduced pricing.

Shipping and taxes are extra. We are not sure if the FREESHIPDNA code will work but it does not hurt to try it. Also remember that AncestryDNA sells its test kits on Amazon.com and at sale prices when it is having a sale. Non-AmazonPrime members get free shipping due to the total cost and because it is fulfilled by Amazon; prime members just get quicker 2-day shipping for free.

There is almost no question that AncestryDNA will have sales in the future like for various holidays and perhaps even for DNA Day which is April 25, this year. For your reference, sale prices in the past year have dipped down to $69 and even $59 occasionally.

AncestryDNA has the largest "pool" of people who have purchased autosomal DNA tests. It provides ethnicity/admixture reports, a match list, matches in common, and an internal member messaging system. It does not provide a chromosome browser tool. Also, if you do not have a data/records membership subscription you will not have access to some DNA features/tools such as member trees and the internal messaging system. Ancestry offers an AncestryDNAInsights subscription for about $59/year as of 2017 which would give access to all of the DNA tools but not any data/records.

At present, Ancestry is also having a 50 percent off sale for New Members on its 6-month US Discovery data subscription ($49 instead of $99 regular price) and its 6-month World Explorer data subscription ($99 instead of $209 regular price.)

Another method we have seen is that those have done an AncestryDNA test (but do not keep an Ancestry data subscription year-round) will sign up for a month subscription in order to more fully investigate their DNA matches (see the trees) and to make contact with matches. They will then cancel at the end of the month (before auto-billing kicks in the next month) and do the same thing again a couple or several months later
