Wednesday, June 11th at 5:00 p.m. is our Annual Summer Pot-luck Dinner and Silent Auction of Genealogy/History Materials
at the Mount Clemens Public Library. It is a joint meeting of the
Macomb County Genealogy Group Friday group and the Let's
Talk...Genealogy Wednesday group.
Bring
a dish (home-made or store-bought) to share and come have some fun. Bidding on auction materials opens at 5 p.m. and dinner begins at 6 p.m.
Please email Ann at the MCGG email (see our contact page) if you plan on attending so we know approximately how
many tables to set up. But if you don't know until the last moment, come
anyway.
Last but not least ... do not forget about our many Resource Development Sessions that take place over the Summer break. If you have a free hour or two at 1 p.m. on those particular Fridays, join us in contributing to the database resources available at the Mount Clemens Public Library.

Father's Day DNA Sales that We Know of ... So Far
Okay, here are the various Father's Day DNA Sales that we've learned about:
Ancestry.com
Ancestry is offering its AncestryDNA (autosomal) test on sale for $89 plus shipping and the offer is good until June 15, 2014, 11:59 p.m. ET. The test is regularly $99 so the savings is about 10 percent. Remember, autosomal tests are for males AND females -- it tests what you inherit from both biological parents.
In addition, RetailMeNot has a free DNA shipping coupon code listed for Ancestry. The code is FREESHIPDNA and the code is good until April 1, 2015. (Note: you do not have to go to the retailmenot website to get the code. It is as you see above, all caps with no spaces.) The success rate is about 90 percent and the most recent comments are that the code works with the Father's Day DNA Sale also.
So if you are going to order, don't forget the coupon code for more savings.
For Father's Day, Ancestry is also offering various discounts on its Family Tree Maker program and a gift membership.
As far as the other two major DNA/genealogy companies, FamilyTree DNA and 23andME, we have seen no announcements regarding any sales. If we learn of any, we'll let you know.

Free and Pay LiveStreamed Sessions from the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree
If you have some free time on June 6 through June 8 the Southern California Genealogical Society (SCGS) is hosting its 45th Annual Jamboree -- a genealogy conference. For the second year, the society will also hold Family History and DNA: Genetic Genealogy in 2014 a one-day conference which will be held on June 5.
BUT you do not have to travel afar to experience the conference. This year, various sessions will be Live Streamed for those who could not travel to the conference. Fourteen sessions will be streamed for free while five sessions from the DNA one-day conference will be streamed for a nominal fee.
The SCGS has a webpage dedicated to the Jamboree and an announcement detailing which sessions will be Live Streamed. The announcement also has the links to register for each of the Live Streamed Sessions. Handouts are available through an app that works on a variety of devices.

Mt Clemens Public Library's Holiday Closure Days for Next Week
It seems Spring just arrived ... now Memorial Day Weekend is just around the corner.
For those of you that visit the Mount Clemens Public Library, please take note that the library will be closed Friday, May 23 through Monday, May 26. The library will reopen on Tuesday, May 27, with its standard hours.
Holiday hours previously announced did not include Friday.

MCGG Surnames List has been Updated and Added to this Blog Site
The MCGG Surnames List was recently updated. And the updated list is now on this blog site! See the Surnames by Name and Surnames by Location pages and use your browser's find feature or manually scroll the list.
Macomb County Genealogy Group Members have the option of adding the surnames they are researching to the MCGG Surnames List. This list is another way for other researchers to find you. Contact is made through a special email so your own email is not given out unless you desire it.
Please note: the prior version of the MCGG Surname List is still on our website hosted at Rootsweb. That prior list will either be updated or removed in the near future.

This Wednesday's Let's Talk...Genealogy meeting topic is My Best Research Trip
This Wednesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in the Genealogy/Local History Room of the Mount Clemens Public Library is MCGG's Let's Talk...Genealogy meeting. The discussion topic of the night is My Best Research Trip. Let's share our best research trips and maybe inspire some for this Summer.

Follow up to Friday's Meeting
We hope you enjoyed the presentation on the Suburban Library Co-Op's Digital Archive.
You can search the digital archive using the catalog of any participating library in the Co-op. To keep your search focused only on the digital archive, change the focus from "Everything" to "Local History Search."
A quick tutorial on how to search the digital archive is available on the genealogy page of the Mount Clemens Public Library's website. At the fourth bullet point down there is a "click here" to reach the tutorial.
To find similar digital archives or collections for other localities, first search for a library or archive in the locality you are seeking. Then review that library or archive's website for a link to a digital archive or collection.
One site Deborah Larsen showed at the end was, the Ontario Library Consortium. Not all Ontario counties participate at this time. But it is worth looking through.
Also, at the end we talked about a really neat website with digitized newspapers. Fulton History is run by one man and is free though donations are accepted. At the bottom of the left-hand column, just above the crawling "spider" with a human face, is a scrolling list of links. On link takes you to a help page. Another link takes you to index of the newspapers included in the database. (At the top of the page you can download the list as a Microsoft Excel file.) There is also a link to a separate historical photos section. Here is a YouTube video about the man and his computer system behind the Fulton History website.
